Nuclear aneuploidy, abnormal nuclear DNA content, has been demonstrated in most malignant tumors. We performed flow cytometric study in 65 patients with operable gastric cancer using paraffin-embedded specimens and analyzed for correlation of DNA ploidy with age, sex, tumor location, gross type, tumor size, stage, histological type and survival.
DNA diploidy was detected in 63.1% of specimens and aneuploidy in 36.9%. There was no correlation between ploidy patterns and age, sex, tumor location, gross type, tumor size and histological type. Meaningful statistical correlation was observed among DNA ploidy, depth of invasion, tumor stage and survival (p<0.05). Patients with diploidy tumors had a significantly better median survival than did those with aneuploidy tumors(34.4% vs 18.3 months, p<0.05). The presence of aneuploidy in gastric malignancies appears to correlate with decreased suivival but more investigations are needed to assess the significant of DNA ploidy as a prognostic factor in stomach cancer.
